High phosphorus

Phosphorus, a mineral essential for healthy bodily function. But too much phosphorus can be harmful to us. When we consume phosphorus-rich foods — including processed foods, sodas, and red meats — our bodies may struggle to excrete the extra phosphorus. This can cause phosphorus levels in our blood to become elevated, which can overwork our kidneys and other organs in the process.

Our kidneys help filter out waste and excess minerals in our bodies — like phosphorus. When we have excess phosphorus in our blood, our kidneys must work harder to eliminate it. This can damage our kidneys and lead to kidney disease over time. People with kidney disease are already at risk for high phosphorus levels, because their kidneys may not be very good at getting rid of the extra phosphorus.
