Do you know about amino acids? They may be a big word, but they are really tiny building blocks that are super important to our bodies. Let's continue and learn about amino acids along the way.
Amino acids are to our bodies as the workers are to the construction of a house. They are vital for the health and strength of our muscles, organs, skin and even our hair. If not for amino acids, our bodies wouldn’t work right.
Proteins are the Legos of our bodies. They are long lines of amino acids that join together like scraps of paper to make different shapes and structures. These proteins play a big role in helping us grow, in fixing our tissues and in bolstering us against diseases.
There are about 20 different amino acids, required by our bodies to be and remain healthy. Certain amino acids are termed essential amino acids, because our bodies can’t produce them on their own, so we need to obtain them from the foods we consume. That said, there are other amino acids that are “non-essential” which means that our bodies are able to make these on its own.
Each kind of amino acid has its own unique job. Some amino acids, for example, help build and repair muscles; others help keep our immune system strong. It’s as though each amino acid is a superhero with its own special superpower!
The best way to ensure that we consume enough amino acids is to eat a range of foods that are high in protein. Meat, fish, eggs, dairy products, beans and nuts are all good sources of amino acids. We make sure our bodies have everything they need to be healthy and strong by eating a balanced diet.
The fact is that muscles are composed of protein, and as such, they require amino acids in order to grow and repair. When we work out or play sports, our muscles work hard and sometimes develop small tears in them. Amino acids swoop in to aid in the repair of these tears and make our muscles bigger and stronger.
